I have to admit Joy and I were a little apprehensive about visiting an abandoned silver mine. We came across this site just outside of Yuma AZ, called Castle Dome which is a replica of the old town and a silver mine tour that you can take to go inside the mine. When we arrived, after a ten-mile drive on a sketchy dirt road in the middle of nowhere, we got the eerie feeling of the movie called "Hills have eyes", it was creepy with some of the mannequins were posed and dressed. I mean you don't really have to put a fake turd in a bed pan, just saying. There is a lot of history here and the views are specular, and there is a lot of cool metal art all over the place. We were lucky and had a personal tour of the mine, our guide really made the trip worth it and ended up really enjoying the experience. Its only open during the winter months, so if you are in the area during the winter, it's a trip worth taking for sure and best to have a SUV or something that can withstand a washboard dirt road and go slow, really slow or your teeth will fall out :)
But take a look at some of these photos in the photo gallery below and you can decide for yourself if it's worth your time. There is no food and little to drink so bring lots of water. The people working here are extremely nice people and according to them are volunteers.
The best part is when they turn on the black lights and all the colors of the mine light up, it was just amazing! Joy got a little claustrophobic a few times, but she was still able to enjoy it, except when the batts came out, then it got a little scary. What's amazing is that they actually turned the lights off when we took our photos as the rock reflects the light for like 15 minutes after the black light is turned off, he called it "charging" the various minerals in the rock. What I don't understand is that they don't mine the remaining silver out of this mine, we saw a lot of silver, our guide told us there could be millions still in the ground!
